EPISODE 6: ALEX O’BRIEN | COO, THE CARDINAL GROUP

In this episode, Alex O’Brien, Chief Operating Officer of The Cardinal Group, talks about how his 5 years as a Marine were instrumental in helping him grow his company from one single family home developm

ent to over 1,000 employees today and how the Marine playbook turned into their company’s core values which guide his team on a daily basis. Once a Marine, always a Marine, says O’Brien.

Alex believes a leader’s responsibility is to maximize their employees’ time because it’s the most important asset they have; and if they’re growing, learning, being challenged, and part of a team working towards a mission, they have the key ingredients for a fulfilling career. And since The Cardinal Group has won Best Workplace two years in a row, they must be doing something right. So many great leadership lessons in this episode – I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!

Here are my three big takeaways from the conversation:

  1. Executives are here to serve the team – a principle directly out of the Marine playbook

  2. Culture is easy to follow when times are good, but it’s most important to stick to those core values when things get hard.

  3. If you put the needs of each person first, ahead of the company and the culture, it can have a damaging effect.
