PODCAST EPISODE 26: MONICA ROYER | FOUNDER & CEO, MONICA + ANDY

Will and grit - the most important characteristics a team member can have in a startup organization, says Monica Royer, Founder and CEO of Monica + Andy. Because in a startup environment, you need people who can think on their feet and not only have a Plan A and B, but also C and D, all the way to plan G. The staff at Monica + Andy was able to lean into changes during the start of the pandemic because of this, as they successfully pivoted from a retail brick and mortar customer experience to an online experience that enabled them to reach a much larger audience. Monica is also passionate about empowering the youngest generation of girls with the skills and confidence needed to become their own successful entrepreneurs and help level the playing field. In fact, Monica’s own 4th grade daughter, when asked if she wanted to be a CEO like her mommy, said that her plans were to be the boss of the CEO - the Chairman of the Board.

Here are my three big takeaways from the conversation:

  1. They set team agreements early on in the pandemic that allowed them to lean in and normalize the chaos; conducting Zoom meetings with kids crying, dogs barking, etc., because first and foremost the team are all humans.

  2. Coming from an immigrant family, Monica and her brother Andy, the founder of Bonobos, developed an entrepreneurial spirit; and they supported each other heavily in their startup journeys.

  3. Tenacity (will) is as important as skill when hiring team members.
